Diffuse Pleural Fibrosis

Diffuse pleural fibrosis (DPF), also known as diffuse pleural thickening and fibrosing pleuritis, is a relatively rare disease process caused by exposure to asbestos, though it has been identified for 40 years in various medical and scientific journals.  Diffuse pleural fibrosis differs from benign pleural plaques and thickening by its ability to cause severe, debilitating respiratory impairment and death.  The lungs depend on negative pressure to "suck" air into the body.  Diffuse pleural fibrosis is a dense, thick area of fibrosis around areas of the lungs that prevents negative pressure from being generated, thereby diminishing a person's lung capacity and ability to provide oxygen to the body.
