What types of illness are related to asbestos exposure?

Every year, many people find out too late that a previous exposure to asbestos could be the cause for the illnesses they face. Many in Minnesota and across the country are left to watch their family members suffer from different illnesses that are related to asbestos exposure in the workplace. Sometimes, the family can also be affected by secondhand exposure as well. In most cases, the conditions do not manifest for many years and could even be fatal. The following are some of the most common illnesses that are related to asbestos.

The illness most people recognize as related to asbestos is mesothelioma, which is a commonly fatal form of cancer that attacks the tissue around internal organs. Currently, there is cure for this disease. There are four different types of mesothelioma, based upon where it resides. Mesothelioma can develop most commonly in the lungs. The other types develop in the abdomen, lining of the heart and testicles.

The leading asbestos related illness is lung cancer. There are many ways to try to increase the survival rate of the afflicted such as chemotherapy, surgery to remove the cancer and drugs that can help prevent the disease from spreading. Another illness is asbestosis, which is a condition that results in lung tissue being scarred. While there are ways to try to treat the breathing issues related with the disease, as well as ease the symptoms that result, there is no way to reverse it.

Minnesota employees who were exposed to unsafe practices in the workplace by handling and inhaling fibers, or were otherwise exposed to asbestos, could develop any of these sometimes fatal diseases. The lawyers at Sieben Polk are experienced in helping victims of asbestos exposure find a sense of justice to help right the wrongs against them, including the surviving families of deceased victims. Nothing can change what has already occurred, but our legal team can help the victims and their families pursue claims for financial redress. In successful cases, the victims could be awarded lost income, medical expenses and any pain and suffering related to any illnesses contracted.
