Woman's estate awarded $3.5M for second-hand asbestos exposure

Many people think mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases are only capable of causing harm to the people who work in an industry where asbestos is present. However, other members of the family in Minnesota and elsewhere could also contract asbestos-related diseases due to second-hand exposure. Since it can take many years for these types of disease to begin manifesting symptoms in its victims, many affected individuals do not find out until it is too late.

After being around her husband when he returned from work for many years, a woman from another state succumbed to mesothelioma. Her daughter recalls that when her father would come home from work, he would have asbestos debris on his clothing, and her mother would dust it from his clothes. She also claims that her mother would sweep the laundry room and wash her father's clothes, putting her in contact with the asbestos particles that were being carried on his belongings.

The mother began to feel ill in February of 2014 and died a year later. Although she had been exposed 30 years prior, the illness was latent and, once discovered, began to progress rapidly. Her husband had died earlier from multiple diseases, among them asbestosis.

A lawsuit was filed against seven companies that were accused of negligence because they had distributed, manufactured or sold items that were related to the asbestos exposure. One of the companies that was found guilty was remanded to pay $3.5 million to the plaintiff's estate, whereas the other six companies settled for unknown amounts. Years past the initial exposure, many Minnesota families are forced to watch their family members suffer or possibly die from asbestos-related diseases. Those who have been affected have the right to pursue their legal options to possibly be awarded financial redress for the illnesses.
