Asbestos exposure risk high when materials are friable

In Minnesota and most other states, danger lurks in many factories, schools, shipyards, old buildings and even private homes. The danger is caused by asbestos. Asbestos exposure is highly likely when materials containing the microscopic fibers become friable.

If an asbestos containing material can be crumbled or pulverized, it is a serious danger. The ability to be reduced to powder form under hand pressure is known as friability. The more friable a material is, the greater the risk that anyone exposed to the area might contract an asbestos-related disease.

Asbestos is actually a generic term referring to six natural minerals. If material containing these minerals is not friable or disturbed in any way, the risk for injury is reduced. There is no safe amount of exposure to asbestos, however, which is why it is so important for employers to fulfill their legal obligations to keep their workers as safe as possible. Homeowners and others who suspect an asbestos problem are wise to seek guidance and support from someone who is well-versed in such issues.

It is never safe to try to remove asbestos containing materials on one's own. In fact, the law states that only certified abatement companies are permitted to conduct asbestos removal procedures. Anyone in Minnesota who is worried about asbestos exposure or believes an existing illness was caused by employer negligence may wish to seek guidance about the litigation process. Asbestos illnesses are often terminal diseases, and medical care is expensive, which is why many exposure victims seek compensation for damages in civil court to help offset costs associated with their conditions.
