How Long Do I Have to File an Injury Lawsuit in Minnesota?
Video Transcript
In Minnesota, the statute of limitations, which is a time limitation to bring a claim, is generally 6 years for a negligence case. So, if you were in a car crash yesterday, you’ll have 6 years from yesterday to bring your claim. Minnesota has a long statute of limitations. We don’t wait 6 years; you shouldn’t wait at all to consult with a lawyer to hire us. Now, there are other statutes of limitations that could apply to different types of cases. The statute of limitation in Minnesota could be as short as 2 years if a certain fact pattern exists. For example, if you tripped and fell on a sidewalk that was recently replaced, you may only have two years from that date to pursue a claim. If a member of your family, a loved one, was killed in a car crash — a tragic, tragic type of case — you only have three years in Minnesota to bring a wrongful death case. So, as often occurs in the law, the general rule is 6 years, but there are exceptions to that. How do you know what applies to your case? Call us, and we’ll tell you.
