Sieben Alexander P.A. is proud to have been the primary sponsor of the 14th Annual John Slagle Memorial Golf Tournament, a charity golf outing in memory of our former client. Proceeds from the tournament honored John’s legacy by supporting the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF).
About the Event
John Slagle loved to golf, a passion he shared with his family. After John’s passing in 2012, his family started an annual golf tournament in his name to honor his memory, spread joy, and share his love for the game with others. A few years in, the Slagle family began using the tournament to raise funds for MARF, with all proceeds benefiting the foundation in John’s honor.
Sieben Alexander P.A. proudly sponsors the tournament annually, with our total donations to MARF exceeding $60,000 to date. This year’s event was held on Saturday, September 20, at the Mississippi National Golf Links in Red Wing, Minnesota.
The tournament has grown in popularity over time and now sees roughly 100 attendees each year. Each participant’s $100 entry fee included access to an 18-hole scramble game, a beverage ticket, and use of a golf cart. The festivities also included a banquet and a raffle, with each participant getting a free ticket with their entry fee.
The Slagles’ Story
John Slagle and his wife, Vicki, lived together in Lakeland, Minnesota, for nearly 40 years. After a long career as a pipefitter, John was eventually diagnosed with mesothelioma as a result of asbestos exposure.
Sieben Alexander P.A. has a long history of serving the Slagle family. A widow of a former mesothelioma client, another relative of the Slagles, recommended our firm to John and Vicki. Our firm’s late partners, a family friend who had previously coached hockey together with John, represented the Slagles in their mesothelioma lawsuit.
With our help, the Slagles won a settlement large enough to cover John’s medical costs, including an experimental surgery that prolonged his life for years. The award also paid for John’s dream fishing boat and vacations to Ireland and the Mediterranean, helping him and his family cherish their remaining time together.
A Legacy of Hope and Awareness
John Slagle, a father of three sons and beloved grandfather, passed away in March 2012 at age 60. Through the Slagle Memorial Golf Tournament, John’s family honors his memory by raising awareness of the dangers of mesothelioma and the lives it has claimed far too soon. The Slagles’ support of MARF helps the foundation provide assistance to families dealing with mesothelioma, fund research on improved treatments, and work toward ending the disease once and for all.
